Founded in 1957 the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the world's largest organization of professional social workers, with over 140,000 members in 55 chapters. The New Mexico Chapter, with about 1,000 members, is the professional voice for social workers in the state. We have been prime movers in a number of social justice areas including repealing the death penalty, achieving universal health care and promoting reform of behavioral health care services. NASW-NM lead the successful effort to secure passage of social work licensing in 1989 and will be submitting major changes in the 2015 legislature. Our annual conference is one of the largest in the country that features national experts and innovative program and intervention initiatives. We offer several cutting edge continuing education programs and was the first chapter in the country to sponsor the Social Work Summit for the state's major social work organizations. We also offer ethical consulting services to our members. NASW is committed to advancing professional social work practice and the profession; and to promoting human rights, social and economic justice, and unimpeded access to services for everyone. Its members work in a broad range of settings including hospitals and other health care settings, community agencies, government, academia, business, nursing homes, schools, and private practice.
